Quick to do

Before it gets too cold it's important to make sure you get done with any fall and winter prep.

An easy way to get winter ready is start by clearing out summer clothes and shoes.

I like to rotate my closet with the seasons, keeps my closet less cluttered and prevents me from keeping unwanted clothes and shoes around.

Clean out and organize the garage. Keeping the garage neat and tidy will help prevent too many spiders from moving in, not to mention no one wants to clean out a garage in the bitter cold.

Go through the holiday decorations and toss out any unwanted or broken items.

Make sure to keep the grass raked and neat for winter, do any pruning or pulling, clean out gutters and make sure the windows and doors are sealed.

Fall yard prep

Fall is the perfect time to prep your yard for winter so it comes out better in spring. September and October is the perfect time to start. Make sure you over seed the entire yard focus on bare spots and yellowing spots. Over seeding will ensure a thick full lawn and reduce weed growth by chocking them out.

Speaking of weeds, fall is a really good time spray for weeds, they are starting to grow deep roots and prepare for seeding so knocking them out now will reduce weeds come spring.

Don't forget to prune plants and trees according to their specific needs. Also, make sure to keep your lawn at 2.5"-3" long for winter, too short can stress it and too long can invite. Stop mowing your lawn when you notice it isn't growing taller.

Aerate and rake your yard to give your grass an extra boost. Make sure you don't let leave gather before the first snow or you may have rot on your hands come spring. Fall fertilizer is also very essential for a healthy yard come spring, look for nitrogen rich blends.

Lastly, fall is a great time to put down sod and plant certain trees, be sure to check your zone and specific plant species for best planting time. Read up on what your trees need to be cared for during the winter, some trees will need watering even if there is snow on the ground.

Fall checklist

  Fall checklist to get your house and yard ready;

Make sure you know how each of your plants and trees need to be prepped for winter. Some require being cut back in fall and others in spring. Cutting back your plants and trees ensures they come back better every spring.

Prep your lawn for fall and winter by using the correct fertilizer for fall lawn prep. Doing this will help bring back a beautiful green lawn come spring time.

Check concrete around your home for any cracks or severe wear. Cracks can become worse during the cold months so make sure to fix them early. Most small cracks can be fixed with an affordable bonding agent found at home improvement stores.

Be sure to store away hoses and drain outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems so they don't crack during the cold winter months. Cover or store patio furniture and outdoor toys to protect from the snow and sun.

Walk around the house and make sure all the doors and windows have proper weather stripping. Good weather stripping can save a lot of money on your heating bill. Make sure you are replacing your furnace air filters and keeping intake vents clean of dust and debris. I like to set a reminder on my phone so I don't forget to replace them. There are also services now that will send them on a regular basis so you don't have to remember when to replace them.

Cold fall and winter months are the perfect time to purge and clear out the house. Give us a call to schedule a bin if you need us to haul away your junk. Thank you for your time!

Next project

Paint is one thing you can do to your home that can change the look and feel quickly and inexpensively. If you are selling your home painting should be a top to-do to get your house market ready.

When considering paint colors it's best to stick to neutral colors. Try to avoid painting every room a different color or if you want to personalize each room pick complimentary colors throughout the whole house. Places you can be bold with your color choices are family rooms or theater rooms. Dark colors can help make a media room feel more relaxed. Dark navy is a favorite choice of home buyers for family and media rooms. Grey's, white's and beige's seem to fit most decor so it's an easy paint to change up the look of the room without always having to paint over a color that was made to match a specific theme.

One area to always keep freshly painted is the outside of the home. Doors, door frames, window moldings, and other areas that currently painted.

Schedule your bin today before you start your next big project.
Thank you, BTDT

Make the best of time spent home

Times are tough, we are all trying to make the best of staying home to be safe. Being home so much has really made me pay attention to all the home repairs and updates that I've been putting off. All this time home can be an opportunity to update your house and fix up your yard.

Here is a list of quick and easy fixes to get you started:

Replace the blinds and curtains if needed, if still in good shape take them all down and clean them. Since they are down use this time to give the window a really good clean, Make sure to clean the window track.

Paint your front door. This is a really easy and cheap way to spruce up your home. A fresh coat of paint can really make a big difference.

Change out your shower curtains, bathroom rugs, and other decor. Inexpensive and can really update the space.

Weed your yard often, weeds spread fast so it's best to stay up on the weeding. Clean the cracks of the driveway and sidewalks.

I like to sweep off the sidewalks, driveway, porch area, and the gutter in front of our house. This keeps our house looking clean and well cared for.

Make the best of your time home and tackle those home repair projects. Stay safe and healthy!

Spring cleaning pre-cleaning

Spring cleaning can be a big chore and some people just skip over it after feeling to overwhelmed with a long list of to-dos. Taking the time to slowly start the process can help make spring cleaning far more manageable. January and February can be super cold months so put the time spent indoors to good use.

Closets are always a good place to start getting rid of cluttering, they are areas that collect so much stuff. Go from room to room cleaning out and reorganizing the closets. Tackle those "junk" drawers while you're at it.

Clean out clothes that don't fit or are out of style.

Go through the kitchen and get rid of old appliances and dishes. Clean out pantries, fridges, and freezes.

If you still have energy and time go through any storage rooms in your house and clear out the stuff that hasn't been used in 3 years and has no use or sentimental value.

Doing these tasks before spring will give you a great head start to spring cleaning and more time to enjoy the lovely spring weather.

Call to schedule your bin so we can haul off your junk!
